Therapy can be helpful if you have identified problems or symptoms in your life that are keeping you from meeting your goals or living the life you want to live. Your therapist is there to help support you in making the changes you want, using techniques backed by research.

Your therapist can help you determine if the experiences you’ve had are contributing to your symptoms and help make recommendations based on your goals. Having experienced trauma is not a requirement for services, many of our services are appropriate for individuals without a trauma history. Click here to learn more about trauma and PTSD.

You and your therapist will work together to understand your symptoms, diagnoses, and goals for treatment. You will then choose the therapy approach that you and your therapist think will work best for you. Our therapies are evidence based, meaning that there is a theory and research supporting their effectiveness in reducing your symptoms. Understanding the underlying theory and research can help your provider tailor the treatment to meet your unique needs. Many therapies also include some practice outside of session, so you help control how effective your treatment is. This practice can also provide knowledge and skills you can continue to use on your own after therapy has ended.

Therapy sessions are typically 50-80 minutes, and you meet every week with your provider. More frequent sessions may be available. Length of treatment varies based on the approach you select, but can range from 5 to 20+ sessions. You and your provider will check in regularly about your symptoms and goals to make sure you are on the right track, and make adjustments if needed.  Therapy ends when you have met your goals for treatment.

A PSYCHOLOGIST (PhD, PsyD, EdD)  has completed a bachelor’s degree, masters degree, and a doctoral degree. This includes 4-6 years of advanced coursework and supervised clinical experience providing therapy. Further, psychologists must complete an additional 3,000 hours of supervised training, including an internship, and often a residency for specialization. Psychologists must pass 2 licensing exams to practice in CA. Psychologists are also required to complete research projects, and are unique in their ability to conduct and interpret research findings, as well as administer psychological assessments (tests) to inform complex diagnosis and treatment.

A PSYCHIATRIST (MD, DO) has completed a bachelor’s degree and medical school. They also complete a 4 year residency program in psychiatry. Some psychiatrists may complete additional fellowship training to specialize further. Psychiatrists need to pass a licensing exam and may also seek board certification. Psychiatrists are unique in that they are able to prescribe medications, and often focus on the biological aspects of mental illness.

A LICENSED CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER (LCSW) has completed a bachelor’s degree, plus a masters degree in social work (MSW). Some may also have a PhD in clinical social work. They must complete 3,000 hours of supervised training and pass 2 licensing exams to practice in CA.

A MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPIST (MFT) has completed a bachelor’s degree, plus a masters degree. They must also complete 3,000 hours of supervised training and pass 2 licensing exams to practice in CA. MFTs are unique in that their training focuses specifically on couples and family systems.

A PSYCHIATRIC NURSE PRACTITIONER (PMHNP) has completed at least a RN nursing degree, as well as a master’s degree in psychiatric/mental health nursing. They must complete 2 years of specialized training in mental health. They must pass a licensing exam to become an Advanced Practice RN, as well as a national certification exam. They can provide therapy and prescribe medications.

Individuals that are designated as interns, residents, associate SWs or associate MFTs are typically in training and working under a licensed provider’s supervision.

As psychologists we are not able to prescribe medications. Medication can be an important part of the treatment plan for some types of problems, but is generally not required to benefit from therapy. For PTSD, therapy is recommended over medication. If you want to explore medication options, we can help you get connected to a medication provider.

Research is showing that telehealth is just as effective as in person therapy for many mental health problems. Clients receive the same benefits in their symptoms, rate their connections to their providers just as highly, and report the same level of satisfaction with their care.

In addition, many people find the convenience of teletherapy makes it easier for them to participate. You can join from anywhere in CA as long as you have a good internet connection and a private space. Not having to deal with traffic, parking, taking additional time off work or other obligations, and the additional stress or anxiety of coming in person makes it a great option for many individuals.

Given that therapy is most effective when it happens weekly, anything we can do to reduce barriers is a win!

We are a private pay only practice.
